Can Police Officers Transfer Interstate?

Will I Be Able To Become A Police Officer In One State Then Transfer To Another?

If you’re thinking about applying to become a police officer, but you’re wondering whether down the track, you might be able to transfer to another police service and continue your career there, we’ll answer that question in this video.

Good day. I’m Russell from Prime Motion Training. There is no direct transfer arrangement between the states and territories for police officers. However, having said that, when you consider the experience, the knowledge, the training that an existing police officer has already had compared to a fresh recruit who will need to be taught everything from scratch, naturally, a new recruit will take longer to train and costs more to train them, more resources involved, et cetera, so existing police officers make very attractive applicants to new states, but they’ll still need to go through the application process like everyone else.

Now, depending on the state or territory that they’re looking to transfer to, there might be a slightly changed or adjusted application process, but they will still need to meet all of the requirements. More likely, what happens if they can meet those requirements and they’re accepted, their training period will be reduced. So rather than going through the academy training, the full training with the full squad, they might do a modified course to help get them out on the road more quickly, given that they don’t need to go over some of the basics. It’s really about adjusting between the way we do it here compared to the way we do it here. Once those things have been adjusted and the officer understands those differences, they can head out and start policing. Okay. So, as always, I hope you found that helpful, and I look forward to chatting to you again soon.
